Prince Alfred Substation, Central Station Sydney

Originally designed in the 1920s under John Bradfield’s push for Sydney’s central railway system, the brick substation buildings immediately south of Central Station served the rail infrastructure network for decades. Following the installation of new substation infrastructure on Chalmers Street, the Substation and Switchroom buildings were decommissioned and left empty.

This project revitalises these State heritage listed buildings, provides new connections into Prince Alfred Park, and prepares these historic buildings for a world-class commercial precinct that celebrates its history. A new pedestrian bridge simplifies access, and a new glazed lift and stair navigates the multiple floor levels across the site to unify the complex.
